After Jesus called His followers the salt of the earth, He reached for a second image, one that shifts from taste to sight. He called them light. Where salt works quietly against decay, light works openly against darkness, and Jesus meant for His people to do both.
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." (Matthew 5:14)
Why light? Because of how darkness is defeated. You cannot argue darkness out of a room, and you cannot fight it with force. Darkness is not removed by argument or by violence.
"Darkness can only be dispelled when the light begins to penetrate."
That is the whole strategy. We do not exist merely to condemn the darkness of this world; we exist to overwhelm it by shining light and truth into it. The greatest battles of our age are ideological, waged among all the isms competing for the human heart. We are not just one more ism. We carry the light of Christ, which penetrates with truth, hope, and righteousness, because Jesus Himself said, "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
Lessons From a Lighthouse
Think about a lighthouse standing on a rocky coast. It was never built to be a tourist attraction or a subject for photographs. It was built because danger is real. It stands there to warn seafarers making their way along the craggy shore, so that they can find safe harbor by following the light. That is exactly why the people of God are placed in this world.
"We're not here to complain about the storms. We're here to shine the light."
It is easy to spend our energy grumbling about how dark and dangerous the culture has become. But a lighthouse does not complain about the storm; it does its job in the middle of the storm. Paul told the Philippians to do everything without grumbling or disputing, so that they would shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation. That is our calling in this moment: to point people to the One who is the way, the truth, and the life.
The Church Is Not the Lifeboat
But here we have to be careful, because there is a dangerous confusion about what the church actually is.
"The church is a lighthouse, we are not a lifeboat."
There is a theology adrift in our world that says as long as you are in the church, practicing what the church teaches and doing the right things, you are safely in the boat and will somehow make your way to heaven. But the Bible knows nothing of the church being a lifeboat. The lifeboat is Jesus. He and He alone is the Savior. No one is saved by being near the light or by belonging to the institution that carries it. People are saved by coming to the Light Himself.
That distinction protects both the church and the lost. It keeps the church humble, remembering that we are the lampstand and not the flame. And it keeps our message clear for the person still out in the dark water, who does not need to be told to climb aboard our boat, but to look to the Savior. This is why Jesus said to let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. The light was never meant to draw attention to itself. It shines so that people can find their way home to God.
